Nadi is the third largest town in Fiji. It is located on the western side of the main island Vitilevu. The population of Nadi and greater Nadi area is around 30,800. Nadi is located approx 9 Km's from Fiji's main international Airport. Nadi is a hub of commerce and tourism with many hotels, motels and lodges. Variety of accommodations are available to cater for various tourists, that is from five star to backpackers accommodation. Nadi town is well equipped with many shops including supermarkets, Atms, duty free shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs,banks, foreign exchange centres, Internet cafes, etc. Great vegetarian food or snacks is widely available as well. Internet cafes cost around F$2 per hour. Esquires Coffee house at the Nadi Airport has internet access open for 24 hrs. Delicious vegetarian food is available for around F$3-5. Generally the trading hours are from 8 am to 5pm. The banks open from 9.30 am and close at 4pm on weekdays. Some supermarkets open till 9pm. Some cafes, fastfood centres and restaurants are also open till late.
If you have hours to wait at the airport and if you wish, you can visit Nadi Town. Easy ways to get there is by a taxi which takes around 20 minutes, costs approx $10 one way. Or you can take the local bus, the local bus stop is about 5 minutes walk from the arrivals lounge. It costs only approx 90 Fiji cents to get to Nadi town. The buses run frequently, that is every 5 to10 minutes up to 7pm. Most of the non express buses servicing the near suburbs stop at the airport bus stop. The bus ride to the town takes around 30 to 35 minutes one way. The bus will drop you on the main street of Nadi town or at the Nadi bus station. All the shops are within walking distance from the bus station.
If you like to do sightseeing one of the main points of interest in Nadi area is a beautiful Hindu temple at the east end of the town. It is the largest Hindu temple in the South Pacific. Also near the Nadi airport at a place called Wagadra is the Botanical Gardens and the Sleeping Giant Gardens.
Savusavu (The location of oneness University)
Savusavu is located on the second largest island of Fiji (Vanua Levu). Its estimated population is around 8700. It's population is a mix of multi cultural and multi racial people including Fijians, Indians, Chinese, Europeans etc.
Savusavu airport is located three kms from the town center on the main highway. There are many boutique resorts, hotels, guest houses to suit every budget. The main street of the town has a supermarket and several other shops and restaurants. A busy open -air fruit and veg market is located in the centre of the town as well. There is a post office, 3 major banks, customs and immigration offices and a regional hospital as well.
One of the major points of interest in the island is the geothermal hot springs located close to the town.
Suva city
Suva is the capital city of Fiji, considered the cosmopolitan hub of the South Pacific. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of Vitilevu. It is the commercial and political centre of Fiji. Its estimated multicultural population including the capital and greater Suva area is around 275,000. The nearest airport is located twenty minutes drive from Suva. The city is located on the peninsula surrounded by the sea. Local buses and express bus services make daily trips to Suva from the western side of the island. A trip from Nadi to Suva in the local express, stopping only at resorts and in towns takes around 4 hours. The approx fare one way is approx F$13. A share ride in the taxi will cost you F$20 each. Car hire from many companies are readily available at the Nadi Airport and town as well.
Fiji Water
Water is safe to drink in Fiji from the taps. Bottled water is also widely available, bottled in Fiji from its natural springs. Approx cost is around $1 at the local supermarkets.
Medical Facilities in Fiji
There are many pharmacies throughout the larger islands in the country. They are well stocked with medicines from Aust and NZ. There is a regional hospital in most towns and cities in the country. Private doctors and dentists are available as well and cheap by international standards. In Nadi a consultation with a private doctor costs around F$12. All doctors in the country speak English.
