Brief history of Fiji

1874 - Fiji was proclaimed a British Colony

1879-  Indenture Indian Labourers were introduced

1970-  Fiji became independent from Britian

1987-  Fiji became a Republic

1997 - Fiji rejoined the Commonwealth.

General Information

Fiji is located in Oceania, a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, approx two thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand.

There are over 300 islands in the Fiji group. Most of them are uninhabited. The two main islands are Vitilevu and Vanua Levu. Oneneness University Fiji is located in Vanua Levu, which is the second largest island in the group.

Fiji's main international Airport is located in Nadi, it is located in the western side of the main island of Vitilevu. 95% of the visitors arrive at the Nadi Airport. The other  international airport is located just north of the capital Suva.

Climate

Fiji experiences a tropical climate without great extremes of heat or cold.

Dec-April

The wet season starts early December and lasts until April. It is hot and humid this time with daily late afternoon tropical downpours in the larger islands.

May-Nov

The rain eases by the end of April and most regions experience a  more moderate climate

From Dec- April. The temperature range is between 33 degrees celcius (91.4 F) to a minimum of 23 degrees celcius(73.4 F). Humidity is around 77% - 95%.

May-Nov - The temperature range generally is between a maximum of 27 degrees celcius (80.6F)  to a minimum of 17.5 degrees celcius (63.5F)

Nights and early mornings are cool during the winter months from June to August. Light sweater may be needed if visiting in these period. Otherwise generally light cotton clothes are advisable
